Indie Subscription: Notoriously Morbid January 2015 Vanishing Cabinet Review

I am no longer purchasing from or recommending Notoriously Morbid.

Notoriously Morbid's Vanishing Cabinet this month was inspired by the 80's television show, Jem and the Holograms. I just missed the original run of the show, so I won't get the references this month. That's the one either good or bad thing about this subscription, is that is usually pop culture themed. You'll either get the reference, or you won't. So far I get about half of the themes, so hopefully this year there will be more themes I can relate to.

AboutNotoriously Morbid is an indie cosmetics company owned by Carrie, and they specialize in fandom collections, with eyeshadows, lip products and lip balms, blushes, and they also have a subscription called the Vanishing Cabinet. The fandom inspired collections they currently have include, Supernatural, Twin Peaks, Buffy, Doctor Who, and various others.

The jars now feature waterproof labels! They look so much nicer than the old labels, and the colors are richer and more vibrant.

Shipping - This month's Vanishing Cabinet subscriptions went out in two batches, mine was sent in the first batch. It arrived in 3 days via USPS from West Virginia to California.

Product Size - The products in the subscription every month, are almost always minis. This month was no different.

Free Samples - The Vanishing Cabinet usually includes one free bonus sample, which is a sneak peek of the next month's theme and products.

Headstrong - "A slightly greyed teal full of pink and purple sparkles."

This one had a strong sheen, and it's got like those iridescent larger sparkles, so that's why it's not completely opaque.

Pureheart - "A vibrant purple with light iridescence and a strong metallic sheen."

This one was also a little sheer, but it wasn't because of large sparkles getting in the way. It's a pretty bright purple but not the best formula-wise.

Rebel - "A rusty burnt red-orange with gold, slightly green shimmer."

This was the only one in this month's subscription that really felt like a normal Notoriously Morbid eyeshadow. It had a slight green sheen, but was the darkest color in the collection. It didn't feel quite right among a bunch of other bright pastels and jewel tones.

Show's Over - "A slightly warm purple with lots and lots of sparkle."

Ehh, this doesn't look like purple to me. It looks like a blue with maybe a slight purple sheen.

Showtime - "A vivid pinky/coral with massive amounts of purple and pink sparkles."

This one had the most of the iridescent sparkles, but I was still able to get it pretty opaque. This one is like a neon pink with lots of pink sparkle.

Starlight Lipcraft - "A soft pink with strong golden sheen and shimmer."

This lip gloss didn't really live up to the swatch they did for the photos of the products this month. It's not as pink as the swatch showed, it's more of a slight white wash that gives your lips a nude lip look. It's a little shimmery, but I had hoped for more color out of this.

Enticing Elba - "A cornflower blue with a sexy copper shimmer." *Sneak peek bonus sample*

This is the sneak peek shade for next month's theme, and I have no idea what the theme could be. There have been a few ideas thrown out, possibly a James Bond theme since the actor Idris Elba has been suggested as a good fit for the next Bond. The other one I liked was handsome actors, as in the vein of, Brainy Benedict, Ravishing Ryan, Jonesing for Jensen, etc. I don't know, we'll have to wait and see! I didn't particularly care for the texture of this one though, so I hope they're still tweaking it. It's kind of a grayish blue with a red sheen.

Overall, this month's Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet was ok. It wasn't my favorite month, as many of the products were kind of a let down in terms of quality and color pay off. Rebel seemed out of place among all the other bright colors this month, but was the only one completely opaque. And Starlight was not that flattering as a gloss by itself. It might look nicer over another color, but I really liked the shade it was in the swatch, so it was a definite disappointment with how it looked for me. The bright colors this month were fun and a definite difference from what we normally get from Notoriously Morbid, but I wasn't particularly impressed by any of them. I feel as though maybe December and January were a bit rushed because how behind they got on Black Friday orders, and the move over to an inventory system. I hope next month wows me because otherwise, I might consider canceling.

Customer Service - I did not have to contact customer service regarding any problems with my subscription this month.

Availability - This month's Vanishing Cabinet is no longer available, but you can email Carrie to get on the waitlist for February.

Overall Satisfaction - I wasn't dazzled by this month's products in this month's subscription. I hope next month is at the very least colors I like, or a theme I like because otherwise I might consider canceling my subscription.

  1. Thought it might be worthwhile to note that NM recognized the issue (at least with Pureheart) and is reformulating to be less patchy - https://www.facebook.com/NotoriouslyMorbid/posts/689350244518629
