Julep Bare Face Cleansing Oil Review

Julep recently sent me some of their extremely popular Bare Face Cleansing Oil to review for you, and I've finally had a chance to do so! I've actually used this in the past, so I'm coming back to it to give a full review, and tell you all the benefits to using this product to remove your makeup every night, without drying out your skin.

The cleansing oil itself comes in this tall, clear bottle, which has a pump. It makes it very easy to apply the product with a cotton pad or just your hands. The directions state to pump a liberal amount into dry hands and massage over dry face. Then rinse thoroughly with warm water. I'm always very careful washing my face to wash my hands first, but using this on a cotton pad would work as well.

Ingredients: Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, PEG-30 Sorbitan Tetraoleate, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil, Citris Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Hibiscus Abelmoschus Extract, Squalane, Phenoxyethanol.

One thing I really like about the bottle itself, is that the directions are printed right on the bottle. I have a tendency to throw out my beauty product boxes, so products always get extra points if the directions are on it. It makes my life much easier when I'm trying to remember how I'm supposed to use a product. And especially since this cleansing oil is meant to be used dry, that's a key note that is important to remember when using.

The oil itself smells mostly like grapefruit, so it has a pleasant citrus scent while you're using it. If you've never used a cleansing oil before, they originally were popular among Korean skincare products, and then made their way here. It can seem counterintuitive for some to use an oil on your face, but I promise, a cleansing oil is not going to add oil to your face. The Bare Face Cleansing Oil removes all makeup, including waterproof mascara, and cleanses it at the same time. With my skincare routine, I would also use a regular foaming cleanser after this step. The cleansing oil I use mostly to remove the toughest to take off makeup. In other words, the Bare Face Cleansing Oil would be the first step of your nighttime skincare routine followed by the rest of your products you currently use.

I think the Bare Face Cleansing Oil is a perfect option for people who don't like makeup remover wipes because they don't remove everything, or you haven't found the right one. Or if you wear a lot of makeup, and wipes just won't cut it, you really need something to remove everything. It's also great for people who don't have an extensive skincare routine, and just want to take off your makeup and go to bed. Or if you're just interested in trying a different kind of cleanser, the Bare Face Cleansing Oil might be for you.

Overall, I do like this product and I think there are some people it would be perfect for. At $28 retail price though, I don't think it's worth it. If you can get it in a Julep Maven box, or at a discount in the Secret Store or in a sale, it's absolutely worth trying if you're in the market for a new makeup remover or cleanser. And it's frequently on sale, or discounted when combined with the Konjac Cleansing Sponge. I currently have this sitting in my skincare lineup next to my sink of products I use. It could be the right cleansing product you've been looking for!

  1. So weird. I commented yesterday, but it didn't go through!

Anyway, I really like this oil. I got it in a Julep mystery box and it works really well for removing a full face of makeup. Like you, I don't use it alone. I always follow it with a gentle foaming cleanser. I do have sensitive, dry skin and I still wouldn't want to go without a regular cleanser.

I'm not sure I would pay full price for this either. I've mixed my own oil cleansers from the oils you can get from Whole Foods and that's a lot cheaper and does the same exact thing. When this is done, I'll probably just keep the bottle and refill it with my own mix! :-p

    1. Oh strange! I do have to approve them before they show up, but I didn't even get one from you!

Making your own sounds interesting! I like that idea. Whole Foods always has the coolest stuff.

    2. My comments haven't been going through for the past week or two. I wasn't sure if it was personal - I liked to a description of how to use the centrifuge tubes from dark matter (I used them every day on grad school 😊) or a site problem.

    3. Oh if it was a link, it may have gone to the spam folder and I may have deleted it. But usually I double check to make sure they are actually spam. I will probably never get the hang of those tubes, only because I have a favorite lid brush, and it's too wide to fit in the tube. If I were to buy more, I would probably dump them into jars instead.
